History
In 2017, the Mexican fields had 29 million plants available for the tequila industry, and by 2022, that number grew to 375 million plants. In the last three decades, the tequila industry has grown by 526%, according to data from the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT).
Despite restrictions on agave planting areas, it is common to see the burning and deforestation of natural spaces to prioritize this crop. Additionally, the high rate of extraction of wild agave specimens must be considered, leading to a reduction in populations and genetic erosion. This threatens the future of these species and, consequently, the production of mezcal itself.
